Threadbearers

For its eighth iteration, Almost Gallery presents Threadbearers. This exhibition brings together nine artists whose exuberant, colorful work explores the way patterns, gestures, and symbols are woven to create personal, visual languages. The exhibition brings together a wide range of materials and processes, including weaving, basketry, drawing, painting, digital illustration, and mixed-media collage, among others. These material shifts are central to the exhibition's themes. The same impulses toward repetition, pattern, ornament, and accumulation take on different meanings depending on the material through which they are expressed. A woven structure, a drawn mark, a digital image, or a surface covered in rhinestones, each carries its own history and associations, expanding the possibilities of how a viewer can extract meaning from the works. 

Threadbearers plays on the word “threadbare,” meaning worn thin through repeated use. Yet the works in the exhibition suggest the opposite: that repetition can deepen rather than exhaust meaning. Each artist returns to and reworks a glossary of marks, patterns, and symbols, testing how much they can hold and how much fruit they can bear. The title refers to the ways artists carry, preserve, and transform disparate references; pushing them forward and weaving them together to make something both personal and new. The sharing of work then becomes the bearing of the threads of one’s experience, identity, and understanding.
