Throughout the Big Steel Era in western Pennsylvania, artists captured a compelling visual record of the industry’s rise and fall: the grit and glory, power and peril, beauty and brutality. At the height of the industrial boom, the region’s three rivers burned bright with molten metal, and thick smoke filled the air. This was a place where muscle met machine, and where immigrants and locals alike shaped not only steel, but also a new vision of modern America.

A century after its peak and decades after most of the mills and mines went quiet, the Steel Valley continues to inspire artists as it remains a powerful symbol of American ambition, resilience, and transformation. This exhibition brings together historical and contemporary works that reflect on the region’s industrial past and its continuing influence.

Steel Valley Visions: An American Legacy comprises an award-winning traditional exhibition (through Jan. 18, 2027) and immersive experience (through Nov. 8, 2026).

Steel Valley Visions received a 2026 PA Museum’s Institutional Achievement Award and a 2026 Arthur St. Clair Historic Preservation Award presented by the Westmoreland Historical Society. Steel Valley Visions: An American Legacy and the immersive experience are made possible by generous support from the Hillman Foundation and The Heinz Endowments.  The Steel Valley Visions immersive experience is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Laurel Ridge Foundation.
