Curated by Tyeasha Clarke, this immersive, installation-based exhibition is set within the architecture of a former bank, exploring systems of value | what is exchanged, what is extracted, and what remains…
The space itself becomes a metaphor, holding the history of financial transaction while reframing it through the lens of creative labor.
Coming of age in the late 1990s and early 2000s, there is a particular nostalgia embedded in spaces like this, a memory of a world that moved more slowly, before the digital era compressed time and collapsed the distance between creation and consumption. The atmosphere is liminal, slightly haunting, suspended between familiarity and unease.
Within this environment, the exhibition asks the space to hold something more difficult to quantify: questions of fair exchange, the commodification of passion + talent, of what is given and what is taken, of what we owe each other as a culture—and what the culture owes its artists.
It also considers what the artist gives in order to create, and what it costs to sustain a creative life. How do you create under these circumstances? Can you?
